An Introduction to the Commission by Judge Irma S. Raker
Judge (Ret.) Court of Appeals of Maryland

I bring you greetings from the Maryland Access to Justice Commission. My name is Judge Irma Raker, and I chair the Access to Justice Commission.

The Commission was created by Chief Judge Bell in the Fall of 2008, to identify and to address existing barriers to accessing the courts and legal services in Maryland, and to expand opportunities for our citizens, for you, to benefit from the protections, rights and resources the law provides. The composition of this Commission is very broad based. It brings together leaders from the judicial, legislative and executive branches of government, the Maryland State Bar Association, legal service providers, and the faith based and social services communities.

As part of its mission, the Commission is hosting seven regional listening events across the State. We hope you can come. We want to hear from you as to what barriers you may have encountered when you have been involved with the courts or tried to solve a legal problem.

Please take a tour of this Web site to learn more about the Commission, and how you can join us in creating greater access to justice in Maryland.

Thank you very much.
