Howard County District Court Celebrates
13th Drug/DUI Treatment Court Graduation

(ELLICOTT CITY, Md. – May 19, 2011) A different kind of graduation will take place this month in the Ellicott City courthouse. On Wednesday, May 25, seven people will celebrate their success with family members and friends during the Howard County District Court Drug and DUI (alcohol) Treatment Court’s 13th graduation. The media is invited to attend.

The rigorous drug and DUI treatment court program combines judicial oversight with intensive treatment and supervision, explains Howard County District Judge Neil Edward Axel, who will preside over the graduation ceremony. The guest speaker will be Howard County Circuit Judge Louis Becker, who was the first drug/DUI treatment court judge in Howard County.

Maryland’s first drug treatment court began in Baltimore in 1984, and the program has expanded to include more than 40 drug treatment courts throughout the state. Howard County’s drug treatment court began in June 2004, and the program for DUI infractions was added in January 2005.
