Judiciary Holds Reception to Honor Young Winners of Conflict Resolution Art Contest

(ANNAPOLIS, Md.Oct. 17, 2011) On Thursday, Oct. 20, Chief Judge Robert M. Bell of the Maryland Court of Appeals will meet the young artists who participated in the Maryland Judiciary’s sixth Conflict Resolution Day Student Bookmark Art Contest, their families, friends and supporters during a reception in Annapolis, at 4 p.m. in the Robert C. Murphy Courts of Appeal Building, which houses the state’s highest court. At that time, Judge Bell will acknowledge the winners and present awards. The media is invited to attend.

More than 450 entries were received from Maryland children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The complete list of the winners, including school name and location, is attached.

The contest was sponsored by the Judiciary’s Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO). Artwork reflected the theme of resolving or preventing conflict, including peer mediation, talking things out, apologizing, respecting differences, solving problems together, listening, tolerance, building peace, or alternatives to violence.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in three age groups: kindergarten-second grade; third-fifth grade; and sixth-eighth grade. The prize for each age group is: $75 for first place; $50 for second place; and $25 for third place. In addition to the prizes, three to five entries may be selected to be printed as bookmarks to promote conflict resolution across Maryland.

All the artwork entries will be on display at the Robert C. Murphy Courts of Appeal
