Judge Marielsa Bernard Receives Montgomery County Bar Association Jurist Award

Judge Marielsa A. Bernard(ROCKVILLE, Md. – June 1, 2012) Montgomery County Circuit Judge Marielsa A. Bernard has received the 22nd Annual Jurist Award from the Bar Association of Montgomery County “for upholding the highest standards of the Judiciary and the legal profession.” Judge Bernard was presented with the award on May 18 during the bar association’s 118th Annual Meeting and Law Day.

Judge Bernard was appointed to the Montgomery County District Court in October 1998 and to the Montgomery County Circuit Court in March 2002. She has been a member of several Judiciary commissions and committees, and currently serves on the Juvenile Drug Court Initiative Committee for the Montgomery County Circuit Court and the Judiciary’s Public Trust and Confidence Implementation Committee. She was the first chair of Montgomery County’s Domestic Violence Coordinating Council (DVCC), and received the 2011 Inspiring Leader Award from the Family Justice Center in recognition of the work she had done for the DVCC.

After completing her undergraduate education at Loyola College, Judge Bernard received her J.D. from the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America. She was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1981, and was a private practice attorney before joining the bench. Judge Bernard is an active member of several bar associations and professional organizations, and has served in a variety of leadership positions. She has received several awards, including the Daily Record’s Maryland Leadership in Law Award in 2003. Judge Bernard was named as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women by the Daily Record in 2003, 2005, and 2007 and inducted into the Daily Record’s Circle of Excellence for Maryland’s Top 100 Women in 2007.
