Judges Mentor Students on Civics

Maryland judges, attorneys, and other justice officials helped students learn about law and society during the Civics and Law Academy in Montgomery County on Tuesday, November 29.  Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera was the plenary speaker for the event, which included approximately 60 students.  During the two-hour session, students from Springbrook High School in Silver Spring met with judges and other legal professionals to discuss juvenile rights, criminal law, free speech, and law in the technology age.

“We have an obligation to our students, who are tomorrow’s leaders, to provide a meaningful understanding of our legal system and the role it plays in our democracy,” said Chief Judge Barbera.  “Our goal is to inspire students to learn and to help them grow into informed young adults.  Informed young adults understand and appreciate the importance of fair and accessible justice for all people through a court system they can trust and in which they can take part.”

The Civics and Law Academy is designed to help high school students gain a better understanding of the law, how U.S. government works, and the roles individuals play in a democracy.  Academy sessions are held during the school year at various locations throughout Maryland.

“Tying in the legal and law-related issues that students deal with on a daily basis sparked lively discussions, which led to great questions and interesting insights,” said Howard County District Judge Pamila J. Brown, Chair of the Civics and Law Academy for the Maryland Judiciary.

The Civics and Law Academy is a partnership of the Maryland Judiciary, Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA), Citizenship and Law-Related Education Program (CLREP), The Montgomery County event is co-sponsored by the Montgomery County Bar Association and Montgomery County Public Schools.
