RECENT UPDATES FROM THE MARYLAND STATE BOARD OF LAW EXAMINERS
UPDATE FOR NOVEMBER 21, 2024 - SBLE’s office will be closed on Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29, 2024 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The filing deadline for the February 2025 UBE in Maryland is Monday, December 2, 2024. To be timely, SBLE must RECEIVE your hard copy Notice of Intent and fees for the February 2025 UBE in Maryland by 4:30pm on that date. Applicants are strongly cautioned to anticipate delays in US Postal Service mail and package delivery due to the upcoming holiday shipping and mailing season. Commercial delivery service (e.g., FedEx, UPS, etc.) packages with “guaranteed” delivery dates on or before the filing deadline (e.g., “next day” services) will be accepted after the filing deadline without a showing of good cause. SBLE will require a showing of good cause to accept packages without “guaranteed” delivery dates, including USPS Priority Mail Express, USPS Priority Mail, and USPS first-class mail arriving after the filing deadline and for all packages postmarked on or after the filing deadline.

- Pursuant to amended Maryland Rule 19-102(d), effective October 1, 2024, the Rules of the Board (aka “the Board Rules”) are hereby posted on the Bar Admission Rules page of the Board’s website. PDF copy HERE.
- Pursuant to Maryland Rule 19-102(d), the State Board of Law Examiners gives notice that, on October 1, 2024, the State Board of Law Examiners approved and posted new Board Rule 11, which establishes new deadlines for filing a Notice of Intent to Take a UBE in Maryland and for filing a Request for Waiver by graduates of non-ABA approved law schools. The Board Rule will be effective beginning November 14, 2024 and will govern UBE exam filings for February 2025 and beyond. UPDATE FOR NOVEMBER 1, 2023 - The Supreme Court of Maryland entered an Administrative Order, today, adopting the NextGen Bar Exam currently being developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. Details regarding the decision to adopt the NextGen Bar Exam as well as a link to the Administrative Order are available HERE.

The State Board of Law Examiners coordinates the receipt and filing of applications for admission to the Maryland bar, administers the bar examination in Maryland, investigates the legal competence and character and fitness of persons who seek a license to practice law in the state courts of Maryland, and recommends to the Supreme Court of Maryland those candidates qualified for admission to the Maryland bar.
