Prince George’s County Circuit Court Celebrates Reunification of Families

(UPPER MARLBORO, Md. —June 24, 2016)  The Circuit Court for Prince George’s County held a “reunification celebration” on June 14 for families whose children had been placed in the child welfare system but have worked with courts and community services to reunify safely and successfully with their children.  The event at the courthouse was part of the Circuit Court’s observance of National Reunification Month.

Families who have successfully fulfilled strict requirements to be reunited with their children gathered at the courthouse to be recognized for their efforts by county and state officials, judges, judicial officials, and representatives from local community partners.  Guests included Gregory James, Deputy Secretary of Operations from the Maryland Department of Human Resources; Gloria Brown, Director of the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services; Administrative Judge Sheila R. Tillerson Adams; and Judge Cathy H. Serrette, Family Division Coordinating Judge.  Following the ceremony, families enjoyed a luncheon and a variety of activities.

“All of us – judges, court staff, and community services professionals – are working together for the benefit of these children with the goal of returning them safely to their families and out of temporary out-of-home care,” said Judge Adams.  “It is a rare opportunity to recognize and spotlight the vital role that mental health and substance abuse treatment providers, courts and judges, foster parents, and others play in helping to reunify, strengthen, and support families.  Partnerships like these help make families stronger and build better communities for everyone.”

“This is a happy day in our court,” Judge Serrette said.  “There are many community partners working with these families to help them access the services and support required for their children's safe return.  This event celebrates the families’ accomplishment and everyone involved.  We hope it also serves as an inspiration for other parents, particularly those going through the recovery process, showing them that it is possible to confront and resolve the issues that led to their separation, and to reunify with their children.”
