Special Collections: Lodge A New and Accurate Map of Virginia and Part of Maryland and Pennsylvania, 1780

This map was created in 1780 by John Lodge and shows the Seat of War during the American Revolution. The map extends west to the Alleghany Mountains and includes Delaware and the North part of North Carolina and Southern part of New Jersey and Philadelphia. 

John Lodge was a distinguished British engraver and mapmaker active in London during the late 18th century. Apprenticed to the prominent cartographer Thomas Jeffreys, Lodge developed his skills in engraving and draughtsman-ship, eventually establishing himself as a reputable figure in the field. His work included the creation of maps for notable publications like The Gentleman's Magazine and The Political Magazine, showcasing his talent and contributing to the mapping of significant historical events.
