red arrow bulletNADCP is pleased to announce...
Teams may now apply for the Adult Drug Court Planning Initiative Trainings (DCPI) for 2008. The Adult DCPI is sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), U.S. Department of Justice, in collaboration with the National Drug Court Institute (NDCI). The Adult DCPI trainings are designed for communities interested in developing an adult drug court program. A cadre of drug court practitioners will work with planning teams to develop their policy and procedure manual. The trainings fulfill three interconnected goals: 1) educating teams about the basic components of drug court; 2) providing teams with the skills necessary for successfully making the shift from standard case processing to drug court case processing; and 3) educating teams about how to build their programs with an emphasis on cultural competency, while integrating court and treatment functions. To qualify for the training program, all members of a planning team, including the judge, coordinator, prosecutor, defense counsel, treatment representative, community supervision representative, law enforcement and evaluator, must be able to attend the full week-long training. The Bureau of Justice Assistance will cover hotel accommodations and per diem expenses for teams selected to attend the Adult DCPI trainings. Transportation costs to the training site will be the responsibility of the attendees. Topics include, but are not limited to, team building, psychopharmacology, mission statement, goals and objectives, target population, treatment, community supervision, drug testing, relapse, incentives and sanctions, confidentiality and ethics, evaluation/MIS and sustainability. To register for this initiative, please visit the Drug Court Planning Initiative page on the BJA website @ http://dcpi.ncjrs.gov/dcpi/dcpi_online_appl.html.

The closing date for this application is Monday, October 15, 2007.

Thank you for your continued support of this effort. If you have any questions, please contact Suzanne Byrnes at the National Drug Court Institute at 703-575-9400, ext. 33 or by e-mail at sbyrnes@ndci.org.

Starting last week, Schwait began presiding over the Baltimore City Circuit Court Drug Treatment Court. Judges generally rotate into the court every six months; however, Schwait will now preside over it indefinitely.”

NPC Research has found that Family Treatment Drug Courts are more successful than traditional child welfare case processing in helping substance-abusing parents enter and complete treatment and reunify with their children. In 2002, NPC Research received funding from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) to conduct the first large-scale outcome study of FTDCs, specialized courts designed to work with substance-abusing parents involved with the child welfare system. To download the Full Report, Executive Summary, or a two-page Key Outcome Findings, click through to NPC Research's news page.
