Baltimore City Juvenile Court Clerk’s Office to
Be Dedicated in Honor of James L. Benton, Jr.

(Annapolis, Md. — January 12, 2005) The Circuit Court for Baltimore City will dedicate its Juvenile Court Clerk’s office in honor of James L. Benton, Jr., at 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2006. Benton is a long-time employee of the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office. The dedication ceremony will be held at the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center, 300 N. Gay Street.

In Fall of 2001 the Maryland Board of Public Works approved the naming of the Clerk’s Office in the new Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center, a state of the art multi-purpose facility for all juvenile court matters.

Benton has served for more than 40 years in various capacities within the Court’s Division for Juvenile Causes. Initially he began his career with the Court as a juvenile counselor and quickly rose to the position of the manager of the juvenile court clerk’s office, where he has served for the past 35 years. As the official custodian of the records, he manages all filings and courtroom files for Maryland’s highest volume juvenile court. Each year the Court receives approximately 10,000 new filings and conducts more than 70,000 hearings.

“Mr. Benton is not only the most dedicated public servant that I have had the privilege to work with, but he represents an institutional history that is invaluable to the Juvenile Court as it attempts to resolve the most tragic and difficult cases involving children and families in the State of Maryland,” said Judge Martin P. Welch, judge in charge of the Family/Juvenile Division for the Circuit Court for Baltimore City.
