(ANNAPOLIS, MD — January 18, 2006) Circuit Court Judge Karen H. Abrams has been named administrative judge for the Circuit Court for St. Mary’s County. Chief Judge Robert M. Bell of the Maryland Court of Appeals designated Judge Abrams as administrative judge effective November 7, 2005. Judge Abrams was appointed an associate judge in October 2002, the first woman to hold such a position in St. Mary’s County. Her designation as administrative judge became effective upon the retirement of Judge Marvin S. Kaminetz, who had served in that capacity since 2002. Before her appointment to the bench, Judge Abrams worked as a private practitioner from 1979-2002. Prior to that, she worked as a social worker in Charles and St. Mary’s counties. A 1969 graduate of George Washington University, Judge Abrams earned her law degree from Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law in 1979. “I hope to maintain the smooth running operation that we have here,” Judge Abrams said. “I want this court to remain a pleasant place for people to work and to do business.” Prior to being named administrative judge, Judge Kaminetz served as an associate circuit court judge (1989-2002) and as a private practitioner from 1969-1989. Judge Kaminetz graduated from the University of Maryland in 1965 and earned his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1968.
