Judge Robert B. Riddle Named Administrative Judge

(Annapolis, MD — March 4, 2008) Calvert County District Judge Robert B. Riddle has been appointed administrative judge for District 4, encompassing Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties. Chief Judge Ben C. Clyburn of the District Court of Maryland made the announcement today. Judge Riddle’s appointment becomes effective immediately.

Judge Riddle replaces Judge Stephen L. Clagett, who retired after sitting on the District Court bench since 1990 and serving as administrative judge for District 4 since 1996.

As administrative judge, Judge Riddle is responsible for the administration of the District Court for Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties, including the supervision of all judges, officers, and employees. He is also charged with the expeditious disposition of cases, management of the trial calendar, and oversight of the court’s budget and procurement functions.

“Judge Riddle brings a wealth of experience to this position,” Judge Clyburn said. “I look forward to his providing a continuation of the fine leadership in District 4 as experienced during Judge Clagett’s tenure.”

Judge Riddle has served as associate judge in Calvert County since November 2005. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Goddard College and a master’s degree from George Washington University, he received his law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law and was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1985. He was in private practice from 1985 to 1994, and served as part-time assistant state’s attorney from 1988 to 1994. Judge Riddle was state’s attorney for Calvert County from 1994 until he joined the bench in 2005. He was elected president of Maryland State’s Attorneys Association in 2003.

“I am deeply honored by the appointment to be administrative judge of District 4,” Judge Riddle said.

Judge Riddle and his family reside in Calvert County.
