Language and the Historical Collection

Libraries collect materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical and scholarly record. As a result, users may encounter materials in the Maryland Thurgood Marshall State Law Library collection that contain historical language or content that is considered offensive, harmful, or demeaning by modern standards.

The library does not censor the materials in its care, but aims to clarify instances where original language is retained by providing additional historical context. The library is committed to accurately presenting materials and collections in a way that respects the individuals and communities who rely on its resources.
