Direct Deposit Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the advantage of having Direct Deposit as opposed to getting a check?

  • Direct deposits are guaranteed to be in your account on payday (Wednesdays).
  • They go directly into the bank and eliminate the chance of a check getting lost or stolen.
  • Many banks waive (checking) account fees for accounts with direct deposit.

Is Direct Deposit available for my first pay check?

  • No.  Direct Deposit takes one to two pay periods to be effective. Until that time you will receive a paper check, which will be mailed directly to the address you write on your the W-4.

Do I need to attach a Voided Check?

  • No.
  • Central Payroll Bureau (CPB) does not require a voided check from you.  Just clearly and accurately write you bank (Routing/Transit Number) and Account Number from one of your checks.  Don’t use the numbers off a deposit slip.

How do I change my Direct Deposit?

  • You may submit a new Direct Deposit form indicating the necessary changes.
  • Once you have been on direct deposit and are signed up for POSC, you may change your account on the POSC screens.
  • Remember that actual checks are issued and mailed to your address on file whenever you change your direct deposit.

If I change banks or accounts, can I close out my old account right away?

  • No
  • You should always wait to make sure the new direct deposit takes effect in the new account before closing the old account.
    • Failure to do so could result in your check being returned to Central Payroll.
  • Larger mergers between banks generally do not require revised direct deposit forms.  The two banks coordinate internally, but if in doubt ….ask your bank.

**When you change banks or account numbers, a paper check will be issued until the new account is verified through Central Payroll.   So it is very important keep your address up to date.
