Judges Mentor Students in Civics

Washington County students met with local judges and attorneys, and officials to learn about law and society during the Civics and Law Academy at South Hagerstown High School on Wednesday, December 14.  During the two-hour session, students, judges and legal professionals discussed juvenile rights, criminal law, free speech, law in the technology age, and career opportunities in law.

The Civics and Law Academy is designed to help high school students gain a better understanding of the law, how U.S. government works, and the roles individuals play in a democracy.  Academy sessions are held during the school year at various locations throughout Maryland.

The Civics and Law Academy is a partnership of the Maryland Judiciary, Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA), and the Citizenship and Law-Related Education Program (CLREP).  The Washington County Bar Association and Washington County Public Schools joined as program partners for the Hagerstown event.
