Judges to Mentor Washington County Students on Civics
South Hagerstown High School Hosts Civics and Law Academy on December 14
HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND (December 8, 2016) – Judges from Washington County District and Circuit Courts, local attorneys, and other justice officials will help students learn about law and society during the Civics and Law Academy at South Hagerstown High School on Wednesday, December 14. The two-hour session will provide an opportunity for approximately 50 students to meet with judges and other legal professionals to discuss juvenile rights, criminal law, free speech, and law in the technology age. News media are invited to attend.
The Civics and Law Academy is designed to help high school students gain a better understanding of the law, how U.S. government works, and the roles individuals play in a democracy. Academy sessions are held during the school year at various locations throughout Maryland.
“We hope that students are inspired and empowered by learning about civics from not only their teachers and parents, but also from those in the legal profession who can speak with them one-on-one about real-world legal matters, answering their questions and mentoring them in the process,” said Howard County District Judge Pamila J. Brown, Chair of the Civics and Law Academy for the Maryland Judiciary. “It’s exciting to see students engaged in lively discussions about law-related issues they may encounter on a daily basis.”
The Civics and Law Academy in Washington County is a partnership of the Maryland Judiciary, Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA), Citizenship and Law-Related Education Program (CLREP), the Washington County Bar Association, and Washington County Public Schools.EVENT DETAILS
