During this COVID crisis we will continue to fulfill the requests of our customers. Please call our office first with any requests so that we may give you information on how your request can be processed. We are accepting by appointment only, requests for marriage license, notary commission and civil ceremonies.

If you are recording a land records instrument we ask that you use the drop box located in the lobby to place your recordings in, or you may send to us by first class mail. No one will be allowed into the office to drop off recordings at this time.

We are currently not processing passport applications. Please contact your local United States Post Office to schedule an appointment to apply for a passport.

For any paper filing for civil/criminal we encourage all customers to use one of the following options to file their pleadings:

  1. Drop box in lobby
  2. First class mail
  3. Register to file electronically with MDEC

If you have an appointment to file in person, only you will be allowed in the building. Please do not bring children, friends, family, etc., they will not be allowed in the office. Please bring exact filing fees as change is in short supply. A mask must be worn at all times. No one will be allowed to remain in the building to fill out forms.

Restrooms are not available for public use, unless you are here for a hearing.

Welcome to the Allegany County Courthouse and the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court. The Clerk of the Court is a locally elected State official with the responsibilities established and regulated by the laws of Maryland and the Rules of the Court of Appeals of Maryland. Since 1658, the office of Clerk of Court has provided the citizens of Maryland with a variety of essential services. The revenue collected by the clerks for these services is distributed to city, county, and state governments.

Each year the Clerk’s office files, processes and maintains civil, criminal and juvenile actions. The Clerk's office records land deeds, mortgages, plats, conveyances and other precious documents. The Clerk administers oaths to County officials, Judges and Governor appointees, issues business and marriage licenses and performs civil marriage ceremonies. The Clerk also commissions Notaries Public. As you can see, the Office of Clerk of the Circuit Court is a busy place. Im very proud of the work we do,and hope the above facts acquaint you with the many services provided by the Clerk here in Allegany County.
