Oldest courthouse that was in continuous use in the State of Maryland up until June 12, 2019. The building was authorized by Acts of Assembly after the removal of the County Seat from Queenstown to Chester Mills, later Centreville. It was erected between 1791 and 1796 on land purchased from Elizabeth Nicholson on her portion of “Chesterfield,” the estate of her grandfather, William Sweatnam.
